Sijpelstoepen | Seeping Pavements
This is a series of screenprints of pavements in the Belgian town of Kasterlee, where I was on a residency at the Frans Masereel Centrum. I was fascinated by the pavements in the surrounding neighbourhood, the particularity of how private and public spaces adjoin each other and how materials often seem to seep into other materials. The pavement is very decisive for our experience of space, but it seldom receives direct attention. Being a product of planning regulations (or the lack thereof), and the availability of materials, the pavement, as the ground that carries us, stands for something much larger.
I used charcoal to print the screens, instead of ink. Most of them are therefore monoprints, and even the images that I printed twice remain unique prints.
