Installation
Paper, cyanotype on fabric, inkjet prints
The installation is a conclusion to a residency at Houtkust, in Houthem (NL), made for an open studio day.
The fabric work consists of individual pieces of 40 x 40 cm, sewn together. Each piece of fabric was prepared with cyanotype emulsion, which makes it light sensitive. Then I crumpled up the fabric, creating creases. These creases were permanently captured by exposure to light. Sewn together, they formed a large piece that I hung on an existing beam, creating a corridor. The front side was on the inside of the corridor. The back was facing the main space, and partly because of the blue being visible in the seams, it became a front as well.
The paper work is a patchwork, made of thousands of small pieces of paper, glued together. The paper is a type of wrapping paper with a regular pattern of small indentations, allowing it to take the shape of the object it is wrapped around. Working on the piece was a daily ritual, and subsequently it grew rapidly during the weeks I was at Houtkust. I stopped working on it the day before the final presentation and I used it to wrap everything that was in the studio, apart from the works I wanted to show. The wrapping marked a transition of the space from a working/living space to something semi public. I liked how visitors could stil see what was under the piece, and how the hiding of my private life became a performative gesture.
