Installation of newspapers, chicken wire objects, pebbles

Nieuws van de dag (News of the day) is the result of a two week residency at Pictura Dordrecht. Together with four other artists, we were invited to take over the exhibition spaces of Pictura and make work in response.

Every day on my way to Pictura I bought a news paper of that day, to use as material. This was a simple task, as a beginning to structure the working process. It lead to an array of other self-imposed tasks and rules. The thread running through all things I did during those two weeks was the question how drawing can be seen as an act of taking up space. This lead to other experiments as well, beyond the confines of the newspapers. I made chicken wire objects as material interventions in the space. They acted as obstacles, or looking devices, besides evoking all sorts of associations in visitors, such as cages or plinths. I put some pebbles from the garden on the floor of the space too, so occasionally someone would unintentionally hit a pebbles. This was another act of drawing in space.
